Sri Lanka-flagged ship sinks in Bay of Bengal

A ship carrying over 3,000 tonnes of rice from India sank near the outer anchorage of Bangladesh's Chittagong port on Wednesday, port officials said.They said the Sri Lanka-flagged vessel M.V. Batulu was in collision with an empty, anchored vessel and sank in the Bay of Bengal. No other details were immediately available.Officials had earlier said the ship was carrying a Singapore flag.

Pakistan issue Champions Trophy threat

Pakistan will not participate in the Champions Trophy if the tournament is moved to another country the Pakistan Cricket Board have stated. The eight-team competition is scheduled to be held in Pakistan from September 12 to 28 but Australia, England, South Africa and New Zealand have all expressed reservations about competing due to security concerns. The International Cricket Council reviewed and approved security arrangements in Pakistan last week and official delegations met with players from the four countries in an attempt to address the situation. However, their fears will not have been eased after a suicide bomber killed 23 people in a hospital in Peshawar on Tuesday, just a day after Pervez Musharraf stood down as Pakistan president. Fresh fighting in Sri Lanka kills 22, mostly rebels

The latest fighting between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tiger rebels in the island's far north has killed 22 people, the military said on Tuesday. The government said its forces had killed 21 rebels and lost one soldier on Monday, during an extended campaign to flush the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) out of their northern strongholds. The fighting in Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Jaffna and Vavuniya districts comes days after the government claimed it stormed and captured a rebel training base with underground bunkers and also took over a town the LTTE uses as a logistics hub. "Troops killed 21 LTTE terrorists in Monday's fighting," said a spokesman at the Media centre for National Security, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity. Sri Lankan student awarded 'Asian Nobel Prize'

The Ramon Magsaysay Award which is described as the "Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize" has been awarded to a Sri Lankan student this year for his work with victims of the war and the tsunami in Sri Lanka. Ananda Galappatti, a doctoral student in international health at Edinburgh received this honor for 'emergent leadership '. Originally from Sri Lanka, the 34-year-old studies is following a joint PhD programme run by Queen Margaret University and Edinburgh University. The Ramon Magsaysay Award, which is considered to be Asia's premier prize, recognises Mr Galappatti's spirited personal commitment to bring effective psychosocial services to war, trauma and natural disaster victims in Sri Lanka. After studying psychology at Cambridge University, he returned to Sri Lanka in 1996 and set up the War Trauma Psychosocial Support Programme. Following the tsunami, Mr Galappatti founded a network of organisations and individuals to coordinate psychosocial services.
