WIMAL ADMITTED TO KURUNEGALA HOSPITAL

Minister of Construction, Wimal Weerawansa was admitted to the Cardiac Unit of the Kurunegala Hospital a short while ago for due to a sudden illness, sources stated.

NEW MALDIVES PRESIDENT TO VISIT SRI LANKA

Maldives new President Mohamed Waheed is to visit Sri Lanka on a two-day tour from Thursday, a spokesman said on Monday. Maldives’ government spokesman Masood Imad told Xinhua that Waheed is to call on Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his visit. “In addition President Waheed is also to sign two bilateral ties with Sri Lanka,” Masood told Xinhua. Sri Lanka and Maldives has close historical, economical, social and cultural ties for a long time. In July the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Sir John Kotalawala Defence University to provide MNDF personnel military training and an opportunity to enroll for its degree courses. The MoU was signed during a visit by Maldives Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, to whom the Sri Lankan president had assured assistance to the Maldivian army. SLC TAKES STEPS TO ADDRESS SEX SCANDAL ALLEGATIONS

The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket will take steps to address allegations of a sex scandal which has hit the SLC head office. The SLC statement comes in the wake of print media reports which raised these allegations. The SLC stated that that the allegations tarnishes the good image of the SLC’s reputation while it does not condone such acts of misconduct if proven correct. A statement from the SLC read: “The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket met on Saturday (August 18)  at 9.30 am at an Emergency Meeting in relation to various print media reports alleging ‘sex scandals at SLC head office’ etc. Sri Lanka Cricket takes serious note of these allegations which also tarnishes the good image and the reputation of Sri Lanka Cricket. SLC as an institution shall not condone any such acts of misconduct if proven correct, and will take all steps which are necessary to bring the culprits to book. On the contrary, if such allegations are found to be false,

Muslims in Sri Lanka will celebrate Ramadan festival tomorrow as the new moon has been sighted, the Colombo Grand Mosque said a short while ago.

PERSON STABBED TO DEATH IN PADIYATALAWA

A person was stabbed to death with a sharp weapon on the Unagasella Road in Padiyatalawa, police stated while one suspect has been apprehended in connection with the murder. The victim was 52 years old and was allegedly engaged in an affair with a woman over whom the murder had taken place, police reported. One suspect was arrested along with the knife which had been used to murder the victim. The Pudiyatalawa police are conducting further investigations.

POWER CUTS CONTINUE TOMORROW - CEB

A two-hour power cut will be imposed tomorrow (August 10)in four stages, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) stated. SUSPECT ARRESTED IN RATMALANA FOR DEALING HEROIN

A person suspected to be involved in dealing heroin was arrested in Ratmalana in a raid conducted by the Police Special Task Force today (August 8). The suspect was in possession of 12 grams of heroin at the time of the arrest, police stated while the suspect was handed over to the Narcotics Bureau for further questioning.

SLTB SUFFERS LOSSES OF RS.6 MIL DUE TO SUBSTANDARD DIESEL

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has suffered losses of around Rs.6 million due to the use of substandard diesel, Transport Minister Kumara Welgama stated. Speaking at a press conference held today (August 7) in Colombo, the Minister said that ten busses operating on the expressway have stalled 38 times on the road while the he added that it costs Rs.600,000 to change the filters alone. A three-member committee was appointed by Ministry of Petroleum Industries to look into complaints of substandard diesel while it had been reported that several buses, trains and cars had been effected after using substandard diesel. A total of 26 vehicles of the Department of Post had been damaged after using substandard diesel, according to Postal Trade Unions.

DRUNK PASSENGER ARRESTED FOR CAUSING DISTURBANCE ON PLANE

Three Sri Lankan passengers were arrested for causing a disturbance onboard a flight arriving in Colombo from Dubai, while under the influence of alcohol.  The three men, residents of Algama, Aluthgama and Wattala, had reportedly behaved in a manner causing inconvenience to other passengers and the crew. After the plane had landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport the individuals in question were arrested by airport security and handed over to Katunayake Airport Police.

FINAL RANDOLI PERAHERA TONIGHT

The final Randoli perahera of the Sri Dalada Maligawa Esala festival in Kandy will take place tonight (August 1) while the final perahera of the historical Kataragama temple will also take place tonight. The Esala festival will end at the Kataragama temple tomorrow (02) following a water-cutting ceremony, the Basnayake Nilame Shashindra Rajapaksa stated.
