Avoid civilian casualties, Holmes tells LTTE

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes urges the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to refrain from shooting at civilians leaving territory under its control. Addressing the media at the Foreign Ministry in Colombo a while ago, Mr. Holmes reiterates that the Tigers avoid casualties and allow the civilians in the conflict areas to move into safes regions

Major blaze near Topaz in Kandy

A major blaze has been reported in the hillock near Hotel Topaz in  Kandy . The fire had started around the shrub jungle area near the hotel, says the Fire Brigade. Fire fighters are attempting to extinguish the flames and prevent the blaze from continuing towards the  Kandy  town area.

Tigers must stop suppression of Tamil civilians: Bishop of Colombo

Rt. Revd. Duleep de Chickera, Bishop of Colombo condemned the two recent attacks made by the LTTE targeting the innocent and defenceless civilians who fled the LTTE clutches. The bishop in a statement said that the LTTE must immediately stop the ruthless suppression of Tamil civilians. The Bishop also said that the number of civilian casualties might increase as the war is now intensifying and the LTTE terrorists are in a desperate situation. He has outlined four realities that all Sri Lankans should strive to ensure at this moment. In his statement, the Bishop stated that in the suicide bomb explosion at the checkpoint in Suthantirapuram, 10 civilians and 20 soldiers engaged in receiving Tamil civilians who had crossed over were killed and many more were injured. The deliberate firing at civilians crossing over from uncleared areas killed 19 and injured 69. This correspondingly leads to a growing sense of helplessness amongst all who long for an end to war and human suffering. In

LTTE Sea Tiger group leader killed

An LTTE Sea Tiger group leader identified as Arivu has been killed by the Sri Lanka Army’s 58 Division infantrymen when they stormed an LTTE hideout in the Piramanthalkulam area in Mullaittivu yesterday (Jan. 31). The LTTE cadres were preparing for an assault at the time of the surprise military attack which left many terrorists killed and others fleeing in disarray, security sources said. Meanwhile, seven other terrorists were also killed by sniper fire in separate locations Northeast of Piramanthalkulama and North of Vishvamadu, military sources added.Meanwhile defence sources say that the two Black Tiger camps captured by troops yesterday yielded the largest weapons haul in the on-going operations in the Vishvamadukulam area. They also recovered 12 bodied of Tiger cadres, who are believed to be from the Black Tiger brigade.
