SLAF steps up attacks on Tiger points

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) stepped up offensives with a series of attacks at Tiger strongpoints west, south-west of Kilinochchi and west of Paranyhan this after noon (Dec. 13) around 1.30. MiG 27, Kfirs and F7 jets were utilized in support of advancing Task Force 1 and 57 Division troops. SLAF spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara says operations are continuing.

Govt. has people’s backing for fight againt terror, shows survey

The government has overwhelming public support for its war against the LTTE, and most people believe the rebels will soon be defeated, an opinion poll published today (Dec. 10) shows. The privately run research group TNS Lanka said close to 75 percent of people questioned said they are "firmly in favour of military action, seeing it as the only route to wipe out terrorism." More than half the respondents also believed the war will be over by the end of next year. Some 91 percent of those polled did not believe the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) represented the minority ethnic Tamil community. The group had questioned 500 people living outside the northern conflict zone between October and November.

PCs dissolved, SB to contest for Central Province

The government through a special gazette notification dissolved the North Western NWPC) and the Central Provincial Councils (CPC) at midnight yesterday (Dec. 08). Accordingly nominations for an election to the Councils have to be called within seven days of the notification of dissolution. The UNP says all moves are in place for party strongman S.B. Dissanayake to contest the CPC Chief Ministerial post.

Special reductions at Lak Sathosa for festive season

The Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) outlets island-wide will be selling essential goods at special rates this festive season, says its chairman Nalin Fernando. The Lak Sathosa outlets are to sell the following at special prices: A kg of Red raw rice will be reduced from of Rs. 62 to Rs. 57, a kg of White raw rice from Rs. 65 to Rs. 58, a kg of dry chili from Rs. 230 to Rs. 190, a kg of Thai sprats from Rs. 310 to Rs. 285, a kg of Basmati rice from Rs. 145 to Rs. 130, a kg of Red Dhal from Rs. 220 to Rs. 190 and a kg of Yellow peas will be reduced from Rs. 180 to Rs. 144.Meanwhile some reputed brands of items will be sold at very special rates at the outlets, said Mr. Fernando.

UNP requests for debate on wide-spread Govt. corruption

The United National Party today (Dec. 05) submitted a letter to the Secretary General of Parliament requesting a date for a debate on alleged widespread government corruption. MP Joseph Michael Perera said they were in favour of the governments fight against terrorism and militarily crushing the LTTE.

Train times changed for two weeks on Kurunegala line

Schedules of some trains have been altered due to repairs on the tracks between Pothuhera and Kurunegala from December 02 to December 15, say Sri Lanka Railways. The train leaving Colombo Fort to Anuradhapura at 10.40 am will leave at 12.00 noon. The train leaving Anuradhapura to Colombo Fort at 8.40 am will leave at 11.40 am.The train leaving Colombo Fort to Trincomalee-Batticaloa will leave Fort at 6.00 am and the train leaving Trincomalee and Batticaloa to Colombo Fort will leave at 9.00 am from trinco and 7.20 am from Batticaloa
