Tiger cadre relayed images of air base attack to leaders, says CID

The main suspect in the LTTE attack on the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) base in Anuradhapura was produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate this morning (July 28). Court directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) that further investigations based on the main suspects statements be conducted. The CID told court that the main suspect had been outside the air base and had video graphed the entire incident from beginning to end. He had also simultaneously relayed the images to Kilinochchi for the LTTE leaders to view. The arrested LTTE cadre had revealed that 24 persons had taken part in the attack while 21 had entered the air base to carry out the deed. The other three, including the main suspect, had directed the attack, the CID told court. The modern weapons and 8,000 rounds of ammunition were smuggled across the Wilpattu jungles according to the suspects, the CID added. The Government is to establish a National Child Assembly to benefit all children at various levels of the society. The main aim of this move is to create the right environment through the right channels to address issues concerning children, the Department of Probation and Child Protection stated. According to the Department, this development, which has commenced at provincial level, is now active in several districts as well. A National Child Assembly will also assist in grooming future leaders, the sources said. It will also create an atmosphere for discussion and debate on child rights and needs among children with various forums being included in the statute of the National Child Assembly.

The daughter of George Pancharatnam, better known as George Master, the LTTE’s one-time media spokesman, visited her father at the CID last week. Domiciled in Australia , Gayathri Jude arrived in Sri Lanka last week with her husband and two children to see her father who is being held by the CID following his surrender to the army during the height of the military thrust against the LTTE. She is a lecturer at a leading Australian University while her husband is an engineer. Gayathri said she was cautioned against visiting Sri Lanka by her friends and relatives who predicted the worst in a “hostile land”. She said when she announced her plans to visit Sri Lanka , they had warned her that the police will not only kill her, but her husband and two children as well, she recalled.
