Russia has got enough Gold and Money to face the crisis

The speaker of the Russian Federation Council, Sergei Mironov, excludes an opportunity for the 1998 financial collapse to repeat in present-day Russia. “There will be no default. I am certain that the 1998 situation will not repeat here,” Itar-Tass quoted Mironov as saying. The speaker said that Russia had saved a considerable amount of financial assets, including those in gold and currency reserves, and could therefore meet its obligations. At the same time, the official said that there were no grounds for optimism in the estimation of the current financial situation. “This is a serious crisis, and there is every reason to believe that it will be a rather long-lasting one,” Mironov said.

America's wealthy feel bite of financial crisis

For the past two weeks, Kathryn Morrison and her husband have been shaken awake at night by visions of crashing stock markets and evaporating retirement plans. Harvey Goldberg liquidated his account when the Dow Jones industrial average was at 12,300, but his financial advisor persuaded him to reinvest. Since then, the Dow has fallen about 20 percent. Wealthy Americans like Morrison and Goldberg were relatively insulated from the global financial crisis until just a few months ago. Of course, reaction to the financial crisis differs from person to person and even from husband to wife. "My husband's approach has been 'Oh my God, I've got to sell, we're m

Hindraf - reportedly a pro-LTTE organization was outlawed on the basis that it plunders the Indian community and upsets public peace. In a statement issued yesterday on the banning, Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar states that the organization had manipulated the Indian community against the government through illegal actions such as rallies and street demonstrations and has caused hatred among the Malay and Indian communities. The declaration, he said, was a result of monitoring and investigations by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) since Hindraf was formed. "As a result of the investigations, the Home Ministry, as per its authority under sections 3 and 5 of the Societies Act 1966, has declared Hindraf unlawful and detrimental to peace, public order, security and the moral v

Court issues enjoining order against chocolates

Court on Monday issued an enjoining order against Edna Chocolates against the manufacture and distribution of some of its brands of chocolates over a complaint of suspicion that it contained traces of melamine. Another popular brand of biscuits were withdrawn in the Swiss markets after authorities there had said they found traces of Melamine in the biscuits from Sri Lanka. But the Consumer Affairs Authority of Sri Lanka says there is no truth to such claims over the biscuits in Switzerland.
