Complaints against police officers will be severely dealt with - IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jayantha Wickramaratna today addressing a press conference said that complaints received against policemen will be severely dealt with and asked the public not to judge the caliber of over 75,000 police officers due to the wrongdoings of a handful.

Park and Ride to be re-launched

With a view to achieve this objective NTC will re-launch Cityliner project on 1st September 2009. The National Transport Commission (NTC) together with the Ministry of Transport has embarked on several projects to achieve these goals. One of which is the Cityliner Premium Bus Service and Park and Ride Concept that was launched in mid March this year. This project has received good response from the public

UN Chief failed during Lankan visit- Norwegian diplomat

Norway ’s UN Ambassador Mona Juul has criticized United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's leadership style including his role during his recent visit to Sri Lanka , where she maintained he had failed in his capacity as UN leader, the Oslo daily Aftenposten reported Wednesday. Ban was said to have 'regular outbursts' making it hard to work with him, was struggling to show leadership and has lacked commitment, Norwegian UN Ambassador Mona Juul was quoted as saying in the secret report obtained by Aftenposten. 'In a time when the UN and the need for multilateral solutions to global crisis are needed more than ever, Ban and the UN are conspicuous by their absence,' Juul's report read. The publication of the classified report is likely unwelcome news for Oslo , as the UN head is scheduled to visit Norway at the end of August. Jackson to be buried on his birthday

Michael Jackson’s body will finally be laid to rest on August 29, on what would have been his 51st birthday, the late singer’s father reveals to the New YorkDaily News. Joe Jackson told the newspaper that the burial will take place in a private ceremony at 10 a.m. on the date at the Forest Lawn Hills Cemetary in Los Angeles -- more than two months after his death. The decision to bury him there, according to Joe, was settled within the last few days. Previously, there had been a disagreement over where the burial should be, with some family members wanting it to be done at Neverland and the others opposed.

Lankan maid informs police: Kuwaiti wedding tent fire suspect arrested

Manama : The first wife of the groom has been arrested on suspicion of setting on fire a wedding tent that killed dozens of women and children and injured dozens of others in Kuwait , according to a newspaper report on Monday. The Kuwait Times and Al Qabas newspapers reported that the woman confessed to setting the tent on fire and that housemaids also said they saw the woman set the tent on fire using kerosene-soaked rags. Al Qabas newspaper said the 23-year-old woman had told police she used petrol to torch the packed wedding tent to avenge her former husband’s “bad treatment” of her before their divorce. A Sri Lankan woman, identified only as Salina , told the Director of Crime Scene Colonel Hammad AlŮ€Enzi that she works as a domestic helper for a family in the area. She claimed to have seen a woman carrying a bottle full of gasoline with a lighter in the other hand. According to her, the said woman asked her to bring newspapers. “I followed the woman and saw her throw the bottle

Special bus service for T/20 fans

A special bus service will be available for spectators of the Twenty 20 match played between Sri Lanka and Pakistan tomorrow at the R. Premadasa Stadium. The special bus service will begin 20 minutes after the awards presentation, from Maligakanda, opposite Sathosa. The buses will ply along the Galle Road , Kandy Road, Negombo Road , High Level Road , Fort and Malabe routes. The match is scheduled to begin at the R. Premadasa Stadiium at 07.00 pm and spectators are requested to be at the stadium by 06.00 pm the latest, said the organizers. There will be a special entertainment at the grounds before the start of play, they added.
