FOSTER PARENT SCHEME FOR ORPHANS AND VICTIMS OF ABUSE

The National Child Protection Authority has taken steps to implement a foster parent scheme for children who have become victims of abuse and neglect and are currently housed in shelters.

Speaking to Media, Chairperson of the NCPA Mrs. Anoma Dissanayake stated that once these children have been provided with psychosocial therapy steps will be taken to reintegrate them into society by handing them over to their families or foster families.

Dissanayake further added that strict guidelines will be adhered to when choosing foster parents and only families that are capable of providing a child friendly environment will be chosen. Furthermore the upbringing of these children will be closely monitored by the Authority.

The NCPA also hopes to provide a sum of rupees 5000 to foster parents from low income families.

Further information on the foster parent scheme can be obtained through the NCPA 24 hour hotline 1929.
