In no manner was the Local Government election held yesterday a free and fair election, says the United National Party. Not only state media and state resources, even certain government officials were used in election propaganda activities, the UNP claims in a release issued today (July 24).
“For the first time in history we witnessed the defamatory act of the armed forces being used for election activities. State events distributing free food and other items were organized even on the election day close to polling stations.” the release stated.
Therefore in no manner can this election be named as free and fair, it read.
Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, the UNP, which along with the JVP failed to win a single LG body, however thanked the public who voted for it “to protect the country’s democracy and to oppose the corruption of the current government.”
