Hutch Launches 3G with A Planned 1000 BTS

Mr. Manjot Singh Mann, Mr. Dennis Lui and Mr.Anand Prakash
Hutch Telecom Lanka announces the launching yesterday of its 3G services.

Initially covering the Western province, Hutch plans island wide 3G coverage with a total of 1000 BTS by July this year.

The addition of the 3G towers together with Hutch’s existing 2G towers means that Hutch’s coverage will be as good as the best of the other operators.  Hutch’s rollout of 3G services follows its entry into the post-paid market a few months ago.

“With only around 10 percent of the Sri Lankan population having access to the Internet we see great opportunity for the growth of our 3G network” says Anand Prakash, COO of Hutchison Telecom Lanka.  Although there has been a strong growth in both fixed line and mobile telephony in Sri Lanka, the development of the Internet still remains slow, accessibility remains limited and available services generally very basic.

“Even though 3G by itself is not new to this country, what we bring to the consumer is higher download/upload speeds.  We can describe our service simply as the new experience the customer can have when they are surfing and it is because we are using newer technology.  Our new generation software is capable of faster unhindered usage, which can override congestion to deliver a whole new and better experience in 3G” says Anand Prakash.

The 3G packages offered by Hutch will be exceptionally attractive.  Hutch customers can buy services according to their specific needs.  “All this will be facilitated through areas in the city of Colombo called the “Hutch Experience Zones”.  Apart from this we will be in the malls and select supermarkets” a company spokesperson said.

Hutch’s investment in the 3G network is backed by its parent, the Hutchison Whampoa Group of Hong Kong.  “The Hutchison Whampoa Group is a global telecommunications provider in the telecommunications industry.  Its backing of this investment supports the Government’s initiatives to develop the country’s infrastructure and services and helps us enormously to live up to the brand promise of Hutch” says Anand Prakash.

Ukrainians injured as police dismantle Kiev 'tent city'

At least 10 demonstrators have been injured in clashes with Ukrainian police and another 100 detained in the capital Kiev after authorities began dismantling a makeshift "tent city" protesting against corruption. The tent city was set up in October by supporters of Mikheil Saakashvili, a former president of Georgia who has become an opposition politician in Ukraine. Saakashvili, a critic of corruption in Ukraine, was deported to Poland in February. He said he was "kidnapped" by Ukrainian authorities and removed from the country against his will. Andriy Kryshchneko, police chief of police, said at the camp on Saturday that "two court decisions" allowed authorities to search and dismantle the camp. Police said that explosives and other weapons were found at the scene

PayPal wants report from Sri Lanka: Sampath, three other banks to introduce service

Though the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) was first to introduce PayPal to Sri Lanka through the Sampath Bank, it is revealed that three other banks too have been now earmarked by the CBSL. A senior official from the CBSL told AdaderanaBiz, “We were to first introduce PayPal through the Sampath Bank. However, we now plan to introduce this service to the country through four banks. We also plan to gradually involve the rest of the banks in the country.” While the CBSL is discussing with the PayPal branch in India to introduce the service to Sri Lanka, PayPal’s Indian arm has reportedly requested a report on Sri Lanka’s exports. The senior CBSL official told AdaderanaBiz that they would be submitting such a report and hence the introduction of PayPal to Sri Lanka would face a slight delay. Though cash cannot be remitted to Sri Lanka through the world renowned PayPal money transfer service sending money from Sri Lanka is possible even now.
