THAI-SRI LANKA TIGHTEN COOPERATION ON TOURISM AND INVESTMENT

Thailand and Sri Lanka have recently agreed to increase cooperation on three issues concerning investment, tourism, and multilateral relationships. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra met with Sri Lankan President His Excellency Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa on the occasion of his visit to Thailand to attend the Visakha Bucha Day celebration during May 31- June 2. Both leaders have discussed cooperation on three aspects, including (1) increasing trade and investments between the two nations, (2) promoting more cultural tourism in a form of combined destinations, and (3) strengthening regional cooperation. The details will be further discussed by a joint Thai-Sri Lankan committee consisting of foreign Ministers of both nations as representatives. COMPLAINT LODGED AGAINST UNP MP GANKANDA

A complaint has been lodged at the Kollupitiya Police station against Rathnapura UNP MP Dunesh Gankanda for allegedly assaulting a person at a night club last night. The victim is currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

UNI. NON-ACADEMIC STAFF STAGE 48-HOUR TOKEN STRIKE

University non-academic staff have launched a 48-hour token strike today and tomorrow (23) which will take place in all universities across the island. Non-academic staff had resorted to various trade union action in the recent past based on several demands including pay hikes. Authorities had then promised to resolve the issue, however so far no action has been taken, Treasurer of the Inter University Employees’ Trade Union Federation Edward Malwattage said. He warned that if relevant authorities fail to address the issues this time, they would have no option but to take serious trade union action.

FONSEKA TO BE RELEASED ON SUNDAY?

Despite recent reports in the media that Sarath Fonseka will be released tomorrow (May 19) in view of the victory day celebrations, Ada Derana reliably learns that Fonseka will in fact be released on Sunday (May 20). Democratic National Alliance (DNA) MP Tiran Alles held several discussions with President Mahinda Rajapaksa over the release of Sarath Fonseka while Anoma Fonseka too met with the President earlier this week. The President had assured both parties that Fonseka would be released unconditionally after confirming to the Hindu newspaper that the country was at a point in which it would be in its interest to release Fonseka. DR. BALASURIYA TO BE A VISITING FELLOW AT MS VARSITY

Dr Mahinda Balasuriya, presently Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Brazil, will be a visiting fellow in the M S University of Baroda in the next academic year to conduct research on South Asia’s national and security issues. He would also deliver lectures for students and teachers on threat of terrorism and counter-terrorism strategies, security issues of South Asia and foreign policy of Sri Lanka, among other topics, a spokesman of Maharaja Sayajirao University said. Dr Balasuriya is an alumnus of the M S University from the 1976 batch, he said. He is an eminent South Asian expert on issues of terrorism, national security and counter-terrorism strategies. FOUR ARRESTED FOR INDECENT BEHAVIOUR

Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel have arrested four persons for indecent behavior near the Moraketiya Temple in Embilipitiya. The men were under the influence of alcohol when they were arrested by officers of the Ambalantota STF camp and handed over to Embilipitiya Police for further inquiries.
